Exploring Ometepe island is an adventure where you can witness the twin volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, the amazing big lake and hike among the waterfalls such as San Ramon waterfalls. The two volcanos are connected by a low isthmus to form the Ometepe island. The local village population is composed of local Nicaraguans, some residents from the neighboring Costa Rica, and tourists from Europe and Canada.

Ometepe island can be toured with 4X4 ATV and motorbikes. Around the island, there are small towns and a few different beaches where you can swim and enjoy the amazing beaches. As a day trip, we decided to go to the side where the two volcanoes are joined by land. We witnessed the sunset on the background of those two volcanoes.
Hiking to the San Ramon waterfalls in Ometepe Island, Nicaragua.
After 2 hours hiking to reach the San Ramon waterfalls in Ometepe Island, Nicaragua.
We explored the hiking to the San Ramon waterfalls, which was very difficult. It took a full half day back and forth. You have to be in very good shape in order to complete this hike. The island is rich in wildlife, which includes different kinds of monkeys, specifically white-headed capuchin monkeys, and lots of other kinds of birds. For swimming, you can choose between different beaches. Nicaragua lake is not recommended for swimming as it is very deep immediately and the sand is very pulling. The island is a very good place for tourists who are usually arriving between mid-November to mid-May. The island is connected by a ferry from San Jorge to Moyogalpa.
Arriving to Ometepe Island in Nicaragua by ferry.
The island is connected to other parts of Nicaragua. After taking the ferry, it is possible to take the buses and to arrive in other parts of Nicaragua, such as Managua, Granada and surf city San Juan del Sur. While traveling in Ometepe, we met many tourists from Canada, which happens to be their favorite place for visiting, including surfing in San Juan del Sur.

Cows walking freely in Ometepe Island, Nicaragua.
Interesting scenes in the main village are the horses that are free to walk the streets without owners and the cows roaming freely in the hills of the island. I highly recommend visiting Ometepe island. It is well accommodating to tourists with lots of hostels. You can enjoy fish as the main dish in the local restaurants.
